The Perfect Gift for Mom, Sister, Wife… or Lover

More is More, a beautiful customizable fragrance by the always luxe and classic Judith Leiber

Talk about a special treat. The gift of this fragrance opened up a new designer door of culture for me. I’m talking about Judith Leiber. You’ve probably heard her name, if you haven’t been lucky enough to own one of her purses yet. They’re special – and special occasion – pieces, so you’ve likely looked longingly at one in a glass case as it sparkled under bright department store lights.

Like this kitschy beauty, which sells for around $5,900 at Bergdorf Goodman

I first heard of Judith Leiber over 30 years ago from my beautiful (and oh so classy aunt), Candace, who lived in the Hollywood Hills. She was married to a hot shot screenwriter who made it in the 1970s and 80s, so she knew all of the beautiful designers. Judith Leiber was already a classic by the time I was a kid. She was known for her beautifully crafted, intricately jeweled minaudières, evening purses made of a metal shell usually encrusted with Swarovski crystals, plated with silver or gold in fun designs like a peach, peacock, watermelon, cupcakes, or snakes.

One of many Judith Leiber masterpieces

And now her legacy lives on with the first daily customizable fragrance. Fashioned in a stunning sculpted perfume bottle adorned with Swarovski crystals, this isn’t your ordinary perfume. It’s a piece of olfactory heaven and a gem for the bathroom or vanity — just like her handbags.

With More is More you can choose from three separate scents that work together as one, depending on your mood or flavor that day. Just select from a sliding dial at the top to get More Gourmand, More Zest, or More Floral and create your own mix. It’s the perfect gift for the maximalist (or minimalist who likes variety) in your life.

How it Works!

FYI: Jerome di Marino, the nose behind the fragrance, loves combining More Gourmand with a touch of More Floral for an indulgent, sexy scent. So, yeah, this is pretty much the perfect gift for any woman in your life.

The legend herself, Judith Leiber

But perhaps the most fascinatingly beautiful thing about this brand is the origin story of survival… the woman herself, Judith Leiber aka. Judit Pető. While researching this piece, I learned that she fled Nazi Europe from Hungary, lived in a house with other refugees, and finally made it to America to find success and meet/marry her first and only husband of over 70 years. She was awarded the highest honors for design in her field, has a museum of her works, and, if all that isn’t impressive and interesting enough, she passed away just a few hours after her husband at the ripe old age of 97. Talk about a long, amazing life filled with survival, beauty, and art.

Looks gorgeous, smells great, feels good. Your mom or wife or girlfriend will thank me.

Travel Beauty: Natural Hydration from Weleda

Weleda Gardens – Bouxwiller, France

As many of you know, the cleaner the beauty, the better my skin. I’m all about finding the most natural (even better *organic*) beauty and travel products or services on the market. I want farm-to-table and farm-to-face, baby!

Since the 1920s, Weleda’s 50 acres of Biodynamic gardens — The Weleda Biodynamic Gardens in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany – are some of the largest in Europe (with additional farms across Europe!). Their farming principles inspire high-quality products and as a recipient of the UEBT certification for “Sourcing with Respect,” this assures consumers that biodiversity is protected along the company’s supply chain.

So, as one of my favorite brands, Weleda, approaches its 100th anniversary, when I read that they’re introducing a new Sheer Hydration facial line I wanted to share. The new products are formulated with Prickly Pear Cactus Extract from the volcanic soils of Mexico and Aloe Leaf Juice (and you know how much we love Mexico). Fast-absorbing, weightless, breathable moisture leaves skin feeling hydrated for up to 24 hours, so check it out!

Sheer Hydration Daily Dew Lotion ($23.99/ 1.0 fl oz)

This lightweight facial lotion is great for all-day hydration. Ingredients include Prickly Pear Cactus Extract, Aloe Leaf Juice, and Witch Hazel Water. This is great for normal to combination skin.

Sheer Hydration Moisture Mist ($14.99/ 3.4 fl oz)

I call this the “spa mist” because it smells like you’re instantly transported to a spa. Instant spa vibes. Instant hydration. Oil-free, this mist is said to boost skin, leaving it soft for up to 12 hours. Perfect for use before and after makeup application. Key ingredients are in line with the other products in this line: Prickly Pear Cactus Extract, Aloe Leaf Juice, and Witch Hazel Water. Works for all skin types!

Hawaiian Beauty Secret: UA Body Botanical Skin Repair

UA Body’s Botanical Skin Repair

We’re back by popular demand! After giving birth to a baby and taking a break during the Covid-19 pandemic (let’s face it, no one in their right mind was really traveling), it’s time to pick up where we left off and offer our readers some of the beauty tips and travel secrets we’ve learned during this hiatus (both physical and virtual). One of them comes from our home state of Hawaii and we have to support the aina because… Hawaiian pride. Originally created to combat dry, cracking skin from the use of harsh sanitizing liquids, UA Body’s Botanical Skin Repair was made popular by Covid-19 for the use of moisturizing the hands and the face.

But here’s why your homegirl loves it. The smell! Not too strong, but not unscented, they infuse calendula, comfrey, chickweed, and red clover botanicals into sweet almond oil, then blend avocado and shea butters scented with lavender, thyme, sage, rosemary, and healing essential oils to aid in cellular repair. The result is a light, delicious vacation-esque cream that fortifies the skin with true botanical oils without leaving a greasy residue. Think of this as a cream with the potency of a salve.

Because of its high concentration of botanicals as essential oils, you want to avoid putting it on any open cuts or wounds, but it does works really well to soothe eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, bug bites, skin irritations and rashes, dry or flaky skin and skin that has been ripped bare of its natural oils. So, next time you think you need some thick greasy solution to solve your skin woes, think again. This light cream does the trick and makes me long for the days windsurfing Kanaha.

Travel Beauty Picks 2017

I’ve been a fan of French skincare line, Decleor, since my early days doing research and working in beauty selling advertising in Elle and Vogue, so when I tested out some new products that looked perfect for travel and (work travel) deprived skin, I had to see what they were all about. Decleor really focuses on high caliber essential oils and purification that feels perfectly Parisian… in simplicity and sophistication. Here are my two wins ready for your carry-on.

Decleor Aromessence Marjolaine Serum

I’ll say this right off the bat. Even though it’s formulated for dry or very dry skin, it’s the kind of elixir that you can also put on oily or combination skin without breaking out. We LOVE ’em. With 100% pure essential Oils, this daytime serum has a refreshing scent that delivers intense and instant nourishing, while also regulating lipid production. The serum contains Marjolaine, Lavender, Myrrh, Rosemary, and Orange Peel Essential Oils to soothe inflammation, brightens dull complexion, dehydrate, and promotes elasticity and firmness. Use in the morning after cleansing by warming just two drops (that’s all you need!) in the palm of the hands, gently applying over the face and neck, and following with skin care cream. Plus, it smells delicious.  Price: $73

Decleor Aroma Purete Imperfections Roll On

Our other top pick is this portable little roller ball treatment for blemishes that packs well, doesn’t need to be checked, and cleansed my weary traveler skin to reduce those red acne spots I get from changes in latitudes, attitudes, and hormones. The refreshing formulation (with my favorite scent, Madagascan Ylang Ylang), soothed my skin while on – or off – a flight. Other ingredients include Sage, Rosemary, Lavender and Lemon Essential Oils to give the skin (and nose) a sense of health and freshness. A perfect little pick-me-up to leave skin purified and clean. I followed the directions to apply to blemishes 4 to 5 times a day and definitely noticed a difference. Just make sure you remember to do it often. The portable size helps with that as it easily slips in a handbag and, I’ll admit, it was really enjoyable to use as the natural aromatherapy oils give the olfactory senses a boost, which in turn stimulates the brain and mood. Price $32.

Travel Beauty: Rodial’s Dragon Blood!

I’m a sucker for all things travel and beauty so when I came upon Rodial‘s new line of product called Dragon’s Blood, I was anxious to dig in. How cool is this? Dragon’s Blood is sourced from the red sap of the ‘sangre de drago’ tree in South America, and works to form a second skinlike film, protecting against environmental damage and containing anti-inflammatory properties. Dragon’s Blood Hyalouronic Moisturiser, which has built-in SPF 15 that works hard to plump and firm dehydrated skin for 24 hours. This light and easy-to-apply cream soothes and protects sensitive skin while providing long lasting moisture and tightening fine lines; a must have for thirst quenched summer skin. Plus, who can’t resist a line of product called Dragon Blood? I bet that’s what the khalessi on Game of Thrones wears. Duh.
